NHS Honors Veterans With Assembly

Fallon Tolnay

Newtown High School hosted its annual Veterans Day assembly on November 11. The assembly took lots of planning and efforts from the people involved. Amy Deeb, Social studies department chair, led the assembly.

Veterans Day is a “celebration to honor America’s Veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good,” US Department of Veterans Affairs said.

The auditorium was decorated with red, white, and blue balloons. They were placed in the plants spread across the stage. Red, white and blue lights were reflected on the back of the stage aswell, these decorations were arranged by The Hawks Honors Society.

“The Hawks Honors Society played a huge role in the assembly, they were responsible for the lunch in and the cards for the Veterans.” Mrs. Deeb said.

NHS seniors Nella Walsh and Paige Armstrong did the announcements for the assembly, and also announced the wars each Veteran participated in and asked Veterans who fought in those wars to take a stand.

“I was very nervous and anxious, however once I got on stage, my nerves calmed down and I knew I was going to do completely fine. I knew this was for such a good cause and I was proud of myself for stepping up and taking this responsibility,” Walsh said.

Mrs. Moneteleone, Connecticut Legionnaire, awarded the Community Americanism Award to recipients Mitch Bolinsky and Don Ramsey for being active contributors to the community and selfless acts, as well as their service.

“We are so thankful for all the Veterans and wanted to recognize them for what they have done for our country and how they have continued to help inspire and influence our community after their service in their respective force was done,” Walsh said.

She “felt honored and proud to conduct such an important event for such important people. It truly was heartwarming to see all of the Veterans and Veteran families who joined us, and I was so happy to be able to thank them and honor them through this event.”

“It wouldn’t have been possible without everyone’s help and collaboration” Mrs. Deeb said.

The Veterans Day assembly was a popular event thought the school, with many students and teachers attending. I took the opportunity to take any photo included in this article.
