ChatGPT is a large language model developed by OpenAI. Its purpose is to assist people with different tasks, such as solving an equation, answering a question, or writing a statement. The model is said to be close to limitless, as it gains information from books, articles, and web pages all across the web. The AI continues to learn and improve over time, as it tries to provide the most accurate information possible. ChatGPT is open to anyone who creates an OpenAI account.
“I think that it's an amazing source of technology I mean I use it, but I am a little scared of how kids are going to use it to be lazy and have it write their own papers and such, but I think there's always going to be a check against that as there will be technology that will counterbalance it. Overall though I believe that it is a good thing,” NHS Social Studies teacher Larry Saladin said.
Saladin expressed his mixed feelings about technology and its potential impact on education. He acknowledged the convenience and usefulness of technology, but he also expressed concern about its potential misuse. However, he still believes that there will always be a way to counterbalance it.
ChatGPT’s goal is to assist users with processing tasks by providing helpful information.
When going onto the program and asking ChatGPT about its goals it said, “As an AI language model, my goal is to provide helpful and accurate information to those who interact with me. I am designed to assist with natural language processing tasks. I strive to continuously learn and improve my abilities to better serve my users.”
Vanderbilt University sent out an email on February 17th addressing the Michigan State shooting. The email focused on the importance of checking in and taking care of each other. At the bottom of the email, there was a line in smaller font, that stated “Paraphrase from OpenAI’s ChatGPT AI language model.”
“It's honestly pathetic. By using ChatGPT to send out this email, they are setting an example for the students, practically encouraging them to use it. This [the Michigan State shooting] is a very sensitive topic for many students, and the fact that they couldn’t take the time out of their day to write the email themselves is just sad,” NHS sophomore Stephen Sibley said.
After outrage from Vanderbilt students, the Associate Dean of Peabody sent an apology letter the day after.
The increasing use and development of Artificial Intelligence has led to growing concerns about its potential impact on society. Many fears surround the idea that AI will surpass human intelligence, along with the potential misuse of it.
“I am scared for future generations, AI is going to be able to do everything. AI can do 20,000 years of human-level work in a week, it’s literally a million times faster. I think we’ll adjust in some way, but I’m still a little concerned. I’m spending all this money to send my kids to college, for what? So computers can do all their work for them? I mean the thing is AI will be better teachers, better lawyers, better surgeons, it's just the way it is,” Saladin said.
