Many hometown festivals and fairs come with the Fall season. This year Newtown Day joined the group as a local celebration of the community. Formerly known as the Food Truck Festival, Newtown Day is a gathering of many local food trucks selling food and drink, but several vendors representing businesses offering other goods and services also attended. The event took place on October 6 from 11am to 5pm across the Fairfield Hills campus, with activities taking place in the NYA Fitness Center and Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard. Although in previous years the event has been called the Food Truck Festival, it has been renamed and expanded and has now added many new attractions for all ages. The event was a success in previous years, but this year it was much larger and vendors and tents for businesses selling products other than food to advertise and give demonstrations of their products and services. Many of these were popular local businesses such as The Newtown Bee, the Toy Tree, and the Newtown Apparel Company. “It was very fun, I went with my family and there was lots of good food and fun games and just a general good vibe,” Newtown High School junior Milan Chand said, who visited the last year. The event offered something for all ages. For adults, a new attraction was the Brew Garden managed by Sandy Hook based business, Chilled ‘N Distilled, for kids there were several bouncy castles in which to play. Parking was available in several locations across town, including Newtown High school, Newtown Middle School, Reed Intermediate, and on the actual Fairfield Hills Campus, with shuttles running back and forth. The festival was bustling the moment visitors were allowed to enter, and several food trucks in particular seemed popular. Rice and Beans was busy and the line was chattering and excited. “Rice and Beans was my favorite food truck personally, throughout the day I went to several different ones and tried their food but at the end of the day my burrito bowl was what I remembered most, it was delicious,” NHS sophomore Eliza Roth said. Although this particular truck was a big hit, there were a variety of foods present, including popcorn and ice cream. There was also an entirely vegan eco-friendly selection from GMonkey. Other vendors offered pasta, barbecue, and breakfast foods earlier on in the day. The main section of the event took place on the Fairfield Hills soccer fields, spilling over into the grassy area next to the fields. On one side next to the road, the food trucks were all situated in rows so customers could wander up and down the line, waiting to see if any item caught their eye. On the other side the vendors and fundraisers were all lined up. “Even though I was there for even more than four hours, I was having fun the entire time. Everyone was laughing and having a good time, and there were so many food choices! I saw so many of my friends there too, everyone was there having a good time with their family,” NHS sophomore and a volunteer at a face painting booth, Abigail Poseno said. Poseno was one of several students raising money for the NHS field hockey team.
