Russia and China Cooperate

Russian president Vladmir Putin met with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi in mid February, amidst the continuing war in Ukraine.

Just days before the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine, Wang paid an important visit, and is believed to be a forerunner of the meeting between Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

“Cooperation in the international arena between the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China, as we have repeatedly said, is very important for stabilizing the international situation” President Putin said

Wang’s arrival in Moscow, where he was to meet top officials such as Nikolai Patrushev, a secretary of the security council.

On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the leaders would be meeting again in the future, but the timing has not been finalized. US officials voiced their concerns about how China partnering with Ukraine would have an impact on the war in Ukraine.

Hours after Wang arrived in Moscow, Putin made a speech on the dispute, saying that he had plans to suspend Russia’s participation in its nuclear arms treaty with the United States.

“Today I am willing to further exchange views with you, my old friend, on the advancement of our mutual relationship, and I think we will definitely reach a new consensus,” Wang told Sergey Lavrov, the Russian minister of Foreign affairs.

For Russia, creating ties with China is essential to surviving and maintaining war effort

“Sino-Russian relations are mature and solid as a rock, and will withstand the test of the changing international situation” said Wang.

Security Council member Nikolai Patrushev told Wang that there was growing pressure in the west, and that Russia and China should strengthen their ties.

Russia has accused Western Countries for being the cause of the war in Ukraine, denying that the tens of thousands of people dead was not their fault, nor their responsibility.

“That’s not good for Ukraine.” NHS freshman Emma Adams said.

United States president Joe Biden made a surprise visit to Ukraine on Monday, February twentieth, which was President’s day, as a show of support for Ukraine.

Countries have joined together to show support for Ukraine over the past year through granting Ukraine’s military, humanitarian, and economic needs.

Western leaders were suspicious and watching for any support China gives to Russia, they are also concerned about China possibly giving military aid to Russia.

“At the same time, we urge relevant countries to immediately stop adding fuel to the fire, stop shifting blame to China, and stop hyping up the discourse of Ukraine today, Taiwan tomorrow.”
