Many new students joining NHS are not informed about the extensive clubs offered within this school, one of which is the Art club. This relaxing club covers all aspects of art including: drawing, painting, clay, and more. “It is an opportunity for students’ to expand their exposure to Art. Many students cannot take art during the school day because of scheduling conflicts, so it is an opportunity for those students to come in and work,” Said the advisor of the Art Club and current art teacher, Carol Pelligra. Pelligra advises all students to get involved and join one of the many clubs in NHS, like Art Club which meets every Tuesday afterschool in room C183 from 2:15 to 3:15.
The Debate team is another previously established club at NHS. This intellectually stimulating club is meant to bring students through the process of having a discussion that will challenge themselves and others. “It is not intimidating, it should be fun, and everyone has to start out knowing nothing,” said Former coach, Larry Saladin, when speaking about the process that current students in debate go through. Saladin advises new students to jump in and join regardless of winning or losing. Debate club is held every Wednesday at 2:00 to 3:30 in F122.
One of the business clubs held at NHS is Deca. “Deca is a business and marketing club, so it is open to any student in the school, nine through twelve, anyone can join,” Said the advisor, Vivian Sheen. This club allows students to test their abilities and to think on the spot on a national level. The $20 beginning fee registers students to Deca in the school club as well as on a national scale. Deca meets the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month in A112 from 2:05 to 3:00.
Math Team is one of the best ways for math lovers to test their skills within NHS. “If you enjoy problem solving, it would be a great resume builder and a good way to get practice working as a team,” said Karen Sherman, the current advisor of Math Team and current math teacher at NHS. Math Team is currently looking to build up the team with as many new students as possible to be able to compete in this year’s competitions. All students, grades nine through twelve, are welcomed to join. Math Team meets every Wednesday (or Tuesday if needed) in F214 from 2:15 to 3:15.
An additional great club is the Science Mentor Club, a helpful and supportive club that was designed to mentor middle school students. The club was created by Baxter Henkin because he felt as though he did not get enough help when he was in middle school. A goal of the club is to reach out to middle school students and be there to support them. “Remember when you were in 8th grade and were working on that project and recall the emotions that went through your head as you struggled to get it done. Think about how helpful it would be to have support from another student in order to get the project done,” said Darryl Nicholson, the adviser of the club. The Science Mentor Club meets on Thursdays from 2:15-3:15 in A200.
The revised previously established club that was Jewel Tones is now known as Asking for Treble with a new adviser. This female a cappella group puts together a cappella music for performances in concerts and around town at any functions that they can book. “Our goal is to be capable of working together because making a cappella music is difficult and it requires cooperation and listening to one another in order for the music to sound good,” said Jane Matson, the new adviser for the club. While the auditions for the club have already been held, you can always wait for the auditions next year and practice your a cappella skills until then. Asking for Treble meets on Mondays and Wednesdays 2:15-3:15 in C184.
Another new club this year is the Fencing Team, a group where – like the title of the club states- they fence for fun. “We just want to get the sport out there, as it is a great sport that is a lot of fun. We hope to incorporate that into the school environment,” said one of the student leaders of the club, Jake Wilson. One goal for the team is to eventually coordinate well as a group and eventually go to fencing tournaments to take home awards. For those who have an interest to join the club, fencing proves to be a fun sport that serves as a great work out and can be enjoyed no matter your skill level in the sport. The fencing team meets on Mondays and Thursdays 2:30-4:00 in the Cafeteria.
The third and final new club this year is the Feminism/Gender Equality Club. The club hopes to bring topics such as feminism and gender equality to light and plans on giving others more knowledge about them. “Our goal is to get as many people in the club as possible and to get people aware of topics like feminism and gender equality. We want to have a place where people are comfortable discussing those topics,” said Astrid Sunberg, one of the three student leaders of the club. To any students looking to join, the club allows for anyone to join no matter what your gender is and allows for a comfortable place that applauds you for having the desire to learn and discuss feminism and gender quality this club meets on every other Thursday from 2:05-3:00 in B236.
Overall, there are many clubs like these available at NHS. All students are encouraged to get involved and join any club or group. For information on any new or previously existing club, please visit the guidance office.
