Nearly everyone around the world is logged onto social media. Tons of sites are arising on the Internet and it’s tempting to sign up for all of them. Vine, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Tumblr are just a few of the many networks that people are interested. However, which social networks are known to be the ‘coolest’ in student’s or staffs eyes? “I am a part of Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, and Twitter. I like Snapchat a lot because it can send pictures to your friends instantly and have conversations,” NHS sophomore Kaitlyn Schneider said. “Twitter, Facebook, and Vine are the apps that I have. I would say Vine is my favorite because I like the six second videos, and most of them are funny,” NHS sophomore Ashleigh Shaw said. While some prefer to send pictures and watching short videos, others enjoy the gift of texting. “I have Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Whatsapp, Pinterest, and Skype. I love Facebook, but I really enjoy Whatsapp because it’s popular in Europe- it’s like texting but for free,” Laura Battisti, an NHS Italian and French teacher said. This variety of social media begs the question of which site is the most used. A majority of the students that were interviewed have Instagram as one of their apps, and said it was their favorite. “I’m a part of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Vine. I like Instagram the most because everyone is on it,” NHS sophomore Josh Deguzman said. NHS sophomore Haley Taylor also agreed with Deguzman, and has many of the same social networks. “I have Snapchat, Instagram, Vine, Facebook and Twitter. Overall, Instagram is my favorite because you can connect with people all around the world,” Taylor said.
“Instagram is my favorite social media app because it is mainly picture based, and there are accounts for everything that you can follow,” NHS freshman Mackenzie Lynne said.
Though Instagram is flourishing, not every social networking site is catching people’s eyes. Some are no longer in the spotlight, and are even being deleted.
“Twitter, since it can be annoying when people obsessively post random, meaningless things. It doesn’t have a really good purpose,” Lynne said, when asked which social network she would delete. Schneider would also delete Twitter. “I feel like Instagram and Vine are taking over social media,” she stated. Battisti would delete Twitter as well. “It’s kind of been bugging me recently,” she said.
While tweeting is becoming tedious to some students and staff, others consider that Facebook is losing popularity as well. Some students think Facebook is becoming obsolete.
“No one is on Facebook anymore and it’s becoming irritating,” Deguzman said.
Taylor also agreed with this statement. “My least favorite social media is Facebook because it is old and Instagram is the new thing and I think it is better than Facebook,” she stated. Some students have other reasons for disliking Facebook. “I dislike Facebook because it’s just another way for people to spread hate and gossip. Also because you don’t even know most of the people on Facebook- for all you know they could be a 30 year old instead of what they say they really are,” NHS freshman Thomas Majlinger said. Overall, the different types of social media are endless, but knowing which apps to download and which ones to delete from your phone is key.
