Marilyn Monroe once said, “Give the girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.” Women commonly wear heels to the workplace or even a night out. To most women heels are so uncomfortable to wear, so why do women wear them so long and so often? Could it be the look, the feeling they get while wearing them, or maybe how others react to them?
A recent study conducted in Brittany, France has shown that when a woman who drops her glove in the street, men were almost 50 percent more likely to stop and pick it up for her if she was wearing high heels rather than if the women were wearing flat shoes. This study raises more questions such as: What are women’s motives to wearing heels? Do women wear high heels to be noticed by men?
“The main reason I wear high heels are aesthetic,” Newtown High School world language teacher Laura Sargent said. This is why most women wear them in the first place.
A conclusion of this study , shows that when a nineteen year-old woman asked for passersby to stop and answer a survey on gender equality wearing approximately 3.5 inch heels, 83 percent of men stopped to take the survey. The same women put on flats and asked people to stop and take the same survey and only 46.7 percent of men stopped to take it.
“I wear them [heels] because they make me feel taller because I am a little short and I blend in with the students, so if I am clicking down the hallway I feel teacher-y.” math teacher at NHS Danielle Oliveri said.
“I do think the people who wear really high heels do get more compliments, they call more attention to the viewer,” Sargent said.
“Heels always give you an edge, [they] make your legs look longer and thinner… someone will always compliment you on a great pair of heels,” a daily wearer of high heels, Tricia Butler said.
The benefits of high heels may vary but the class will remain the same.
