Donald Trump is running for office in 2016. Some love him and some hate him. Some say he “calls it how it is” and some say he is sexist and racist. Some believe his success is business can transfer to politicians; others believe he does not have what it takes. But the truth is that the American people are blinded by Trump’s rhetoric and need to begin to focus on his ability to govern. Here is the truth.

Donald Trump is the kind of man where what-you see is what you get and this is, largely, the reason Trump is taking laps around the other GOP candidates. While Trump may talk like the average American and says what we are thinking, that does not mean he is capable of running the one of the most important countries on Earth.

Penn Jillette, the entertainer and magician, says it best on why we need a superior person in office. “It is perfectly okay to be, personally, a little uncomfortable with certain immigrants. It is not okay for our country to be that way.”

In a society, we must be better than ourselves and transcend our irrational thoughts and hatred. The president must be a leading example for the country and the world. With Trump, our leading example will be ignorance and anger; qualities which must not be allowed to be our leading example.

Donald Trump’s view on political correctness is, “I don’t, frankly, have time for total political correctness. And to be honest with you, this country doesn’t have time, either.”

Presidents respect the importance of being politically correct because it displays the leading example for the country. Reporter, Ta-Nehisi from The Atlantic, says that being politically correct is “about practicing tolerance” and this falls back to the president being a leading example. The president must be tolerant, understanding, and fair to the American people.

To be fair, many journalists critique Trump on who he is as a person and not on his plans to resolve issues in America. So I want to talk to about his policies. The first, of many, controversies for Donald Trump, were his comments on illegal immigrants coming from Mexico. His solution? Build a big wall. My five year old cousin would say that. Simply building a wall makes it harder for them to come in, yes, but people can climb through sewers, go underground, and take a boat around the wall.

Furthermore, 41% of illegal immigrants coming into this country are not from Mexico. Trump’s plan is, simply, too simplistic. He said on twitter, “For those that don’t think a wall (fence) works, why don’t they suggest taking down the fence around the White House? Foolish people!,” I’m pretty sure that that the dozens of fully armed and packed Secret Service agents are keeping us from storming the White House, not a fence

Trump also claims that Mexico is “killing us in trade,” In an interview with Trump, Chuck Todd asked how, “How are they killing us?” continuing to say, “Their GDP is lower than ours. This is not a country that is killing us. Just by the stats,” Todd said. The facts are the facts, yet Trump still believes we are being economically “killed” by Mexico. Why? Because it is easy to make up problems and make the American people care. Furthermore, Mexico’s peso has also decreased in value over the years, again, their economy is far from booming as Trump suggests. He focuses on striking a nerve in the American people rather than really seeing the truth and the reality of an issue.

Another position of Donald Trump is his plan to bring jobs back to the country. Trump often boasts himself on his ability to get jobs back in the country. In several interviews he says that he will take jobs back from China and put more Americans back to work. Here is the issue, Trump; it is the American companies, like Ford and Apple that are outsourcing jobs. It is not as if foreign countries are creating these jobs. The issue is that in China, workers do what an American would do at a fraction of the cost.

To bring jobs back from China, Mexico, and other countries, we would have to first, make it illegal for countries to outsource jobs. Unfortunately, that is an infringement on the rights of our capitalist society. Second, we would have to convince (or force) China and other countries to not allow an American business to come in and employ more of their citizens. There is simply no way Xi Jinping would willingly stop a growth in his economy because Trump has an aggressive tone.

The two cornerstones of Trump’s campaign are getting jobs back in the country, and stopping illegal immigration. Both of which, are unintelligent and implausible. But this is all he talks about in the media. When asked other questions on social issues, and other topics, Trump resorts back to the United States being “killed” in trade. This is the issue. Trump knows so little on social issues and other topics, yet, he attracts enough supporters through talking about his wealth, and the issues of jobs and illegal immigration.

But why does strike a chord with the American people? Because his rhetoric drowns out the flaws in his ideas. People believe that he can do it all because he has created a fortune, but Trump’s ideas as a politician do not work in government. His attitude does not work in government. And finally, he does not work in government. He may have been a great businessman, but he does not have the diplomatic skills to deal with world leaders, the intelligence to create a prosperous country, and the kindness to be a leading example for the rest of the world.
