The year to experiment with fashion has been 2015: the time of some of the biggest fashion feats and flops. With body suits, platform shoes, bell-sleeved shirts on the rise, overalls and khaki cargos singing their swan songs, 2015 had it all. Which trends are here to stay in 2016?
Hair was big this year, whether it was “No Shave November” or just Justin Bieber
showing off his new “do,” there were many major experiments this year. One of the rising stars was definitely the man bun, an up-and-coming style where a man with long hair pull it up in a bun. For celebrities like Harry Styles, Brad Pitt, and Leonardo Dicaprio, the man bun was in the forecast. With that said, just because our favorite celebrities wear them does not mean everyone loves them.
“Worst trends [of 2015] were man buns. [They were] easily one of the worst if not the worst trends of 2015. I feel like beards are going as in gone and not staying,” Newtown High School sophomore Ryan Patrick said.
Facial hair, also proved to be a part of male fashion. Whether it be the month of November or just a night out this year the male beard could be just as ‘on point’ as a woman's hair can. Beards are also popular on the web, sticking things in beards and posting it on Instagram ensures receiving millions of “likes” on Instagram these days. For example, Instagram account @willitbeard sticks things from garland to toothpicks in his beard. This year, beards have shown us that there were limitless possibilities.
“The undercut hairstyle the shaven sides and the big top pulled back and beards were big this year,” Patrick said.
Another big trend last year was crop tops.
“Going on the girl’s side, the cutoff shirts... I mean I sometimes don't understand fashion of the other gender as much,” Patrick said.
Women's fashion had a big year in 2015 with some staples including flannel and fringe. With 70’s fashion making a comeback, one should expect to see more and more boxy frame glasses, bell-sleeved shirts and high-waisted everything. Not all trends have made it to the next century but past trends have definitely evolved into new ones. Balloon pants, for example, are not seen as much anymore, but one can say that joggers a staple in everyone's closet are the next generation of balloon pants.
Although everyone has different motives to wear crop tops, they are more commonly worn to make a fashion statement but also for comfort.
When asked about crop tops NHS Senior Celia Gold had only one thing to say.
“Worst- crop tops,” NHS Senior Celia Gold said.
NHS sophomore James Barden agrees with Patrick when it comes to female fashion, particularly ripped jeans.
“If you have the money why not just spend it to get full jeans,” Barden said.
“Big trend [in 2015] was the very 70’s inspired look. [People] have definitely been bringing the bell sleeves, overalls, floral prints, suede, and especially the classic round circle sunglasses. Another trend was the mock neck cut. They have been incorporated in tons of shirts and dresses,” NHS sophomore Justice Zoto said. “Another trend is very chic looking floppy hats and faux fur jackets. One last trend that has been very big this year were statement necklaces. No matter what style, day, or time it is, no one can even go wrong with wearing one!”
Zoto, also made great predictions for 2016.
“One trend that will arise is the ‘dress over a shirt’. This seems to be slowly rising and will probably be a highlight since it is very different and very universal in terms of the way you want to express it,” Zoto said.
Already worn on the streets of Milan, the fashion capital of the world, a dress over shirt look is definitely on the rise, it is only a matter of time until you find it on the racks.
2016 has some work to do if it wants to live up to the year 2015. But what's in and what's out is constantly changing and the possibilities are endless.
