The Rise of Pumpkin Spice

Annika Brady, Staff Writer

The leaves are changing color, the weather is changing temperature, and it is finally time for us girls to break out our new booties, vests, and scarves. Oh, and we can’t leave out the classic Pumpkin Spice Latte in our hand with the Starbucks logo facing out for people to see; that would just be a disgrace. Nope, can’t do that.

Thanks to the explosion the pumpkin spice latte has created, dozens of companies have tried to make the pumpkin spice magic work for their products, from pumpkin spice kale chips to dishwashing liquid, and these companies have gone way too far.

Long gone are the days when pumpkin pie was the only pumpkin staple in our fridges during autumn. Here are the days where everything you eat is pumpkin. While in the beginning of this craze developers kept the pumpkin spice smell and taste to relatively normal products such as scented candles, lotion, donuts, and well, that is basically it; it did not take long for these products to get out of hand, and downright weird at points.

Who knew your lasagne was not completely without pumpkin spice lasagne noodles and pumpkin spice sauce? Or that your car was missing out because you were getting a regular oil change rather than a pumpkin spiced one? Did you realize that you have been doing breakfast wrong, for your pumpkin spice Cheerios cannot be eaten without pumpkin spice milk?

Did you want to make grilled chicken sausage this fall season? Well, you only can if you are willing to eat pumpkin spice chicken sausage. More into fish than chicken sausage, but still love pumpkin spice? Buy your very own pumpkin spiced salmon today. Do you like soup more than meat? Do not fear, Campbell’s has pumpkin spice soup available at your local supermarket today!

Are you tired of mundane orange juice? Guess what—there’s a fix! Pumpkin spice juice. All the cool people are drinking it. And while you’re drinking this juice, be sure you have a pumpkin spice English muffin in your hand, topped with, you guessed it, pumpkin spiced cream cheese.

While I’ll admit, I do love a pumpkin spice latte, I do not love pumpkin spiced salmon or soup or chicken sausage or juice. And the real question is, who does?

I wonder how people came up with some of these products, or why someone would ever think they might actually be good, or bring in a profit. It’s time for these companies to be stopped and given a new flavor to obsess over. Because the whole “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra has gone way too far in the case of pumpkin spice. It’s broken, people, and in need of a dire fix.
