As Conor McGregor continues to dominate the UFC, chatter of a fight with boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather has only intensified. McGregor recently got a boxing license in the state of California. McGregor has looked unbeatable within the UFC recently, and may want a big challenge in the sport of boxing.
Mayweather has been willing to admit in previous interviews that a fight may eventually happen. Mayweather was asked by a reporter from TMZ about comparisons between the two fighters, and Mayweather took offense to the comparison.
“...But never compare Conor Mcgregor to me. Once again, I’m an elephant. An elephant don’t beef with ants,” Mayweather said to TMZ. Mayweather is sick of the comparisons between the two, and many people think Mcgregor attempting to box Floyd would be a huge mismatch.
If sports fans are ever given this gift of a superfight, the paydays for both would be huge. McGregor has already demanded a price tag of $100 million just to step in the ring. Despite this massive payday for McGregor, he does not intend to just show up and get paid. When McGregor was asked about this by Evan Bell, a reporter for BJPenn.com, he made a bold statement and made himself clear.
“I would not go in there just to show up. I’d go in there to knock him out and that’s it,” McGregor said. This statement by Conor only left fans craving the fight more than ever. While a knockout by Mcgregor would be unlikely, fans feel good knowing that he will go into the ring trying to win, not dance around for all this money.
The fight would most likely only be available on pay per view, and would generate a huge profit from viewers. But, would this really be money well spent, or just another waste of money? Many fans were left feeling upset and disappointed after Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao was not the fight they were expecting.
Some students think that if this “superfight” happened that it would be more like Mayweather Pacquiao was, and not an all out war.
“I think the fight will probably be overhyped,” Newtown High School Sophomore Eric Moore said. Moore is a casual fan of fighting, and he understands that if the two fought, it would not be as entertaining as most people believe it will be.
“Mayweather knows how to box,” Moore also said. Some people think that McGregor’s power and strength will help him win, but others say McGregor trying to box Floyd would lead to a one sided affair where McGregor has trouble landing anything on Floyd. Moore is one of those people, he believes that it would not really be a fight, but more just a dominate performance by Mayweather.
Most say Mayweather would win this fight easily, but some would say otherwise. Some think McGregor’s power and strength will help him win.
“Mcgregor is much younger than Floyd, that’ll help him a lot,” NHS Sophomore Jake Kneski said. The debate will continue on until the day the two fight.
This fight is still far away from happening due to restrictions in McGregor’s UFC contract, but if it ever did happen it could be one of the biggest sporting events of the year. This fight would do wonders for the sport of boxing, Mayweather stepping back into the ring would once again put boxing back into the national spotlight and have the chance to be one of the most interesting fights ever.
