Chargers Move to LA

Taylor Clark-Paivo, Staff Writer

The San Diego Chargers recently relocated their organization. Owner Dean Spanos announced that the NFL team would move to Los Angeles and join the Rams as the second team to relocate in the past two years on January 12, 2017. Fans have not welcomed the change of location as a new logo has stirred bad feelings with their supporters.

Hours after the news, The Los Angeles Chargers changed their profile picture on all of their social media pages to the new refurbished logo for the change. The logo was dark blue and white with the initials of Los Angeles. Social media ripped at the new logo making comparisons to its neighbor the Los Angeles Dodgers. The logo’s colors were then changed a day later on the 13th of January to a turquoise and yellow color due to the criticism of the original logo. Just when everyone thought they were done they made a third change that was just the team spelled out with the same colors. The team called the design a “placeholder” later on to start the launching of their new brand.

The players of the Charger’s franchise have spoken out on the move to Los Angeles as well. Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman tweeted a GIF of Forrest Gump running away and it was presumed that he was happy to go to Los Angeles. The tweet was later explained by Perryman as more of a tribute.

“Listen my last tweet is not me running to LA, I love it here in SD, I love you guys, you guys keep us going and active on Sundays.” Perryman said.

He later went on to say he was sad to be leaving and that is what the tweet was meant to portray. Rams players Travis Benjamin, Tyrell Williams, Jahleel Addae, and Chris Hairston all went to Twitter, and they all posted emojis as reactions to the news. Quarterback Philip Rivers spoke on the subject as well on “Hardwick and Richards” Sports talk show.

“I'm a little bit numb about it all even beforehand and now even more so.”Rivers said on the relocation.

He also expressed excitement about the move.

“Well, I'm just fired up all the time for whatever the task is and that's just the only way I know.” Rivers exclaimed.

Football fans from Newtown High School have also expressed their feelings towards the Chargers abrupt relocation. NHS Sophomore Nick Capelli, a New York Jets fan shared his thoughts.

“I lost all respect I have for the organization and I believe this move will only make people mad.” Capelli said.

Kyle Cascone, a Los Angeles Chargers fan also expressed his thoughts.

“The team has a bright future. Moves are already being made to put the organization back on track including a new head coach, offensive line coach, and conditioning coach.” Cascone said.

The team did recently hired a new Head Coach Anthony Lynn and new Defensive Coordinator Gus Bradley who has boasted a great defensive resume when he was with the Seahawks in 2009.

“Hopefully they can stay healthy next year and show the league what they are all about.” Cascone said.

The Los Angeles Chargers officially start under their new stadium and name in the 2017 Regular Season hoping to carve a path to their first Super Bowl win in the near future.
