In the most historical Super Bowl game ever played, the Patriots have managed to do what no other team has done, come back from a 25 point deficit. The Patriots held the Falcons to seven points in the second half rallying back to win 34-28 in overtime. No other Super Bowl game has ever gone into overtime before. It’s almost as if the game was scripted, Tom Brady and the Patriots making a huge comeback in the second half to win the game in overtime.
The Atlanta Falcons won the coin toss and elected to differ. Both teams then went four on their first drives keeping the game at 0-0. The remaining of the first quarter stayed scoreless but Atlanta fired out in the second quarter scoring 21 points. After recovering a Legarrette Blount Fumble, the Falcons went 71 yards on 5 plays to score a touchdown on a Devonta Freeman 5 yard rush. The other Falcons touchdowns were from an Austin Hooper 19 yard reception and a pick six from Robert Alford. On the last drive of the first half, the Patriots put up their first points of the day with a 41 yard field goal from Stephen Gostkowski.
On the Falcons second drive of the second half, they tallied on another touchdown making the score 28-3. The Patriots finally found their groove on their next drive finding the end zone on 13 plays. The Pats held the Falcons scoreless after their first touchdown. They then scored another field goal and two more touchdowns along with two 2-point conversions to tie the game. The Patriots received the ball in overtime and went 75 yards on 8 plays to score a rushing touchdown from James White to win the game.
Tom Brady went on to win his 5th Super Bowl ring along with his fourth Super Bowl MVP. But Brady himself said, “I think James White deserves game MVP”. James White had a reception touchdown and two rushing touchdowns. His second rushing touchdown was the game winner in overtime.
Patriot’s fans are super excited over this comeback win. “The Patriots won because they are awesome and just a better team than the Falcons. It was a crazy comeback and Tom Brady played fantastic in the second half. The Falcons completely choked, all they needed was one field goal to win,” NHS sophomore and Patriots fan Aiden Jasinski stated
“It was one of the craziest games I have ever seen. I don’t think the Falcons choked. The Pats just stepped up their game in the second half. They played actual Patriots football in the second half. I was so happy to see Brady getting killed in the first half and I still cannot believe they made that come back. It was a crazy game,” NHS sophomore and Giants fan Kyle Duval said.
This Super Bowl has been the only Super Bowl to go into overtime and no one had ever come back from a 25 point deficit in the Super Bowl until now. Tom Brady and the Patriots have made history. Matt Ryan and the Falcons put up a great fight but could not hold on to the lead. Super Bowl 51 will be remembered forever.
