The Grammys

Tanyon Estores, Staff Writer

This years Grammys already became a discussion off the bat with the elaborate dresses and outfits that decorated the red carpet and the stage. Whether its going down in history for its controversial wins or stunning performances has yet to be decided

The 59th Annual Grammys was on February 12th, and it's already tempting to wonder how this year's show is going to be looked at a decade from now. Will it be the Grammys where a handful of ascendant artists offered career-best national performances that cemented them as part of the pop elite? Will it be the Grammys that established many artists political sides? Or will it just simply be the one where Adele beat Beyonce for the night's highest award, a choice that many rose their voices to (and none so loudly as the winner herself)? It's hard to say exactly how the 2017 Grammys are going to be remembered. But one thing is for sure: They will be remembered, and pretty vividly at that.

“The grammys are overrated because numerous artists are dropping out because of the lack of diversity amongst the winners.” NHS Senior Izzy Russo says, the same opinion many have concerning the win of Adele over Beyonce for Album of The Year. The award was a huge win for Adele and her team, meanwhile Beyonce Knowles looked on with teary eyes while Adele gave a heartfelt speech exclaiming it was simply not her time for the award.

While there were the tearful parts of the night many artists had the performance of their lives. The Weeknd came and delivered with a national performance that made him known to the world with help from his friends in Daft Punk. Chance the Rapper performed a emotion-fueled rendition of “All We Got” that had the audience on their toes. And while slightly disastrous, Metallica and Lady Gaga's cross-genre performance still got the nation rocking.

“The Grammys humanizes these famously acclaimed names and brings them down to earth with everyday people. Showing the tears, the embarrassment, and the mistakes makes them all the more relatable and less godly in a sense.” Miriam Pachniuk a 67 year old Newtown resident that has seen every single Grammy and plans to keep watching for awhile. As an occasional bar or cafe singer seeing these idols in such an exposed state makes her dreams all the more reachable. The awards not only inspire the masses but gives a sense of realism to these normally God complexed humans.

“When watching you sort of feel like you’ve just been given this one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these amazing stars have all of their hard work pay off. It makes the moment feel very intimate and as if you know these people.” NHS Junior Emily King says regarding the tears and laughter that was throughout the entire segment. From memoriam slide shows and dedicated performances the night became nostalgic very quickly.

Regardless of the dead mics and stage stumbles, the night had a great significance from all the celebrities that contributed to the Grammy awards. Giving tribute to the artists that have passed in the year they made the night memorable during the heartfelt performances and made it a event for the books.
