Upcoming Summer Movies

Gabi Drew, Staff Editor

As vacation and warm summer weather approaches, so do many films, whether they be good or bad. Falling under a variety of genres, people are looking forward to seeing the new movies.

“I’m excited for a lot of spring and summer movies, including the ones based off of books, because I like to read them first. That includes The Circle,” Newtown High School Media Center Secretary Lee Brownell said.

Many of the premiering movies are action-packed, especially superhero themed films. One of the most popular of these action-packed movies is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Starring Chris Pratt, the movie was released on May 5. Reviewers claimed that the film was enjoyable and successful, but not as original or fresh as the first film in the franchise, released by Marvel in August of 2014.

There are other superhero-themed films, including Spiderman: Homecoming, which revolves around Spider Man as a teenager and premieres on July 5. The movie features Zendaya, Tom Holland, and Iron Man who is played by Robert Downey Jr.

What is gaining a lot of attention is Wonder Woman, partially due to the lack of movies centering around her. The film depicts Wonder Woman’s journey of discovering her full powers and destiny through meeting an American pilot, and will be released on June 2.

Other action films not focusing on superheroes include Baby Driver, starring Ansel Elgort who gained most of his fame due to his acting in The Fault in Our Stars. Following Baby Driver, which premieres on June 28, The Hitman’s Bodyguard will be released on August 18. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, the film has already received positive reviews for its suspenseful car chases and conflicts.

Baywatch is more of a comedic action film that features many more popular stars such as Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson, who is also one of the film’s producers. Johnson assumes the role as an experienced lifeguard, while Efron plays the inexperienced recruit. In the movie which premieres on May 25, the two main characters must work together to investigate criminal activity surrounding the bay.

“Out of all of the movies that are coming out, I’m probably most excited to see Baywatch. I don’t like heavy movies, especially scary ones, so a comedic movie is best for me. I might also see Baby Driver,” NHS sophomore Linda Bomova said.

An action film that is more appropriate for children is Despicable Me 3, which presents a new conflict for the main character Gru. Two new characters are introduced, including Gru’s twin brother. Along with his wife, Gru attempts to prevent a villain from achieving world domination in the third installment along, which premieres on June 30.

Another movie for the whole family is Cars 3, which will be released on June 16. Centering around Lightning McQueen voiced by Owen Wilson, the movie depicts a race in which McQueen loses, and everyone begins to wonder whether or not he should retire.

Summer does not only bring action and fantasy movies featuring superheroes, but dark horror movies as well. The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, portrays a vengeful princess who is awakened, and brings terror to the entire world.

“I’ve seen a bunch of mummy movies with my dad, and they were always more funny than serious, so I’m looking forward to seeing The Mummy because it’s supposed to be a lot more suspenseful and scary,” NHS sophomore Lizzie Browning said.

A thriller, Alien: Covenant premiered on May 19. The science-fiction film also includes some horror with the conflict involving a violent alien and a dark, uncharted area in space. Members of a colony ship who are played by Katherine Waterston and Billy Crudup are forced to fight the alien in order to survive.

“I saw the trailer for Alien: Covenant, and I’m looking forward to seeing that, because the scenario is so scary, which makes it interesting. There also have been a lot of bad movies about aliens. I’m hoping this one’s good,” NHS sophomore Lila Abbagnaro said.

There are many other movies premiering in the summer, such as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell no Tales, Dunkirk, The Dark Tower, and more. Hopefully, these upcoming films succeed in entertaining audiences, but for now, most of them are still attempting to impress the critics.
