Astros Win World Series

Shane Demers, Staff Editor

The Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-1, in game 7 of the World Series to win their first World Series title since they were founded in 1962. Both of these teams dominated in the regular season, each getting over one hundred wins. The Dodgers last World Series win was in 1988 and they were hopeful to win it all this year. Also, this was a record breaking series, as both teams combined to hit 22 home runs in the matter of 7 games, making this a very exciting World Series.

“Our team believed in each other all year. And through the good times and the bad times, through a rough stretch in August, to getting down 3-2 against a very good New York team. There's a lot of things that happened. And this is -- I'm so happy to be a part of it to bring a championship back, to a city that desperately needed one, is a surreal feeling,” World Series MVP George Springer said.

Two years in a row, the World Series Champion has overcome a massive World Series droughts. The Cubs had not won since 1908, and the Astros overcame their 55 year drought and won the first World Series in franchise history.

“The league is getting exciting now. You never know what teams can win and it’s nice to see new teams winning every year and different teams in the World Series almost every year. My whole life of watching baseball I have seen the Astros and the Cubs struggle every year. The fact that teams are rebuilding is good, it makes the playoff games very cool to see different teams in it,” NHS junior Wyatt Cerreta said.

Some people think it was especially important that Houston won because what they are going through with Hurricane Harvey relief, including NHS junior Will Hampford.

“It was great that they won after all they’ve been going through. They had to overcome a massive hurricane that went through their city, yet the fans continued to go to all of the home games, even though some of their homes are probably being rebuilt right now. The city of Houston went through a lot and I’m happy that they got the World Series to maybe calm things down in the city.”

Both teams will be back next year as playoff contenders. Both of these teams have very young talent and will be threats to the league for the foreseeable future. We will have to wait and see if the Astros are ready to defend their World Series title in the upcoming 2018 MLB season.
