The 2024 Primetime Emmys will be hosted by Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, the well-known father-son duo who both starred and won Emmys for the show “Schitt’s Creek,” will make this year’s ceremony a very memorable one, which aired live on ABC on Sunday, September 15 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. The Creative Arts and Governors Gala ceremonies also occurred over two nights on Sept. 7-8.
FX’s historical epic, “Shōgun,” is nominated for 25 Emmys throughout the drama category which is tied for the most among all shows for this year. Shogun is tied with Hulu’s other critically acclaimed series “The Bear,” which also has 25 nominations in the comedy categories. It will be a fascinating competition to find out which show actually wins the most Emmys.
“I think Shogun is a show that everybody needs to be paying attention to right now because it is nominated for so many Emmys, but also that combination of action with drama makes it a very entertaining watch,” NHS senior Theo Anderson said.
There are also other drama shows trying to get wins in those drama categories. Among them is “The Morning Show” starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon who are again nominated for outstanding lead actress in a drama series. There was also the final season of the historical drama “The Crown” that was nominated for outstanding drama series.
The surprising part about the awards this year is that there was a 33% drop in overall submissions this year, this might likely be another impact of the writers’ strike on the television industry. Emmy voters have been mostly on the same page during the rounds of voting. By voting for popular shows that still show inclusivity and the diverse stories and talents that have been represented.
The comedy categories will also have some well-known shows that are likely to take awards. The very popular “Abbott Elementary” has won four Emmy Awards and landed 20 nominations, with nine of those nods coming from the upcoming 2024 ceremony on September 15. Showrunner and leading actress Quinta Brunson will again be nominated for her work in outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for the show.
There are also many other non-Abbot Elementary comedy shows trying to take a few away from Abbot Elementary. The final season of Curb your Enthusiasm was nominated with Larry David getting a nomination for outstanding lead role in a comedy series. There is also the popular Only Murders in the Building that is nominated for outstanding comedy series along with nominations for stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez in their respective categories.
“I think it's important to nominate a wide range of comedies because people have a very different taste and opinion on what is funny. They shouldn’t just nominate the same thing over and over again because audiences' taste develops over time with the development of new shows,” NHS senior Stephen Jarvis said.
There will also be a significant number of nominees for actors and actresses in the guest comedy and drama categories. Jamie Lee Curtis who won an Oscar last year is nominated for “The Bear”. As well as Nestor Carbonell for his appearance in “Shogun”.
“I think it is great to see all kinds of shows being recognized for their outstanding impact on television audiences across the world. There are many good shows that will be rewarded for making such an impact and I can’t wait to see what happens next,” NHS senior Evan Cowley said.
