The Newtown High School Varsity cheerleading team won the Class L State Championship on Saturday, March 1 at Trumbull High School.
The team had a score of 94.45 finishing ahead of 19 other Class L teams. Cheshire came in second place with a score of 88.00.
The Hawks cheerleaders followed their recent SWC Championship (covered in the February edition of The Hawkeye) with their second state title. They won previously in 2020.
Top six teams advance to the Team of the Year competition at North Haven High School on March 8. Along with this the team qualified for the Regional Championship on March 22 in Worcester, Mass.
“There were a few things I believe could have gone better, but it didn't even matter because we won by a landslide. It felt amazing winning for my senior captain, who had finally got this experience after four years,” NHS junior Isabella Walder said.
The cheerleading team is made up of 11 freshmen, juniors and seniors. Seven of the girls competing on the mat are freshmen. The team consists of Cydney Turoczi, Ella Macey, Ashley Jackson, Isabella Walder, Leticia DeOliveira, Mel Lordeiro, Abi Gonzalez, Maddie Moore, Anna Verashagin, Ava Keil, Mikaela Sisenstein, Kaelyn Rosvally, Charlotte Oltran, Reese Roland, Macie Phillips, and Lily Willinger.
“ It felt really nice to go out on my senior year with a win with my favorite team,” NHS senior Ella Macey said.
