As the election for candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris has passed, fears have risen over violence after the election results are released because of how tight and near even the polls have been.
Whether it be potential violence in politics, overturning poll results, or bigger implications involving democracy as a whole.
Forty percent of registered voters have expressed fears over violence. Some speak of concerns over democracy itself considering former president Donald Trump has allegedly denied his loss in the event of the 2020 election, and the events that occurred on January 6. When the topic of post-election violence has been brought up, it seems inevitable that the January 6, 2021 riot will be brought up as well.
Congress had considered what is to come with the results of the election, and expected violence regardless of who wins. At the Capitol, evacuation exercises were done regularly in case of casualty, many had seen three helicopters involved in the process. There has been speculation this is due to the past election.
The Homeland Security Department as well has been enforcing safety measures for election workers during Election Day. More than 9,000 voting centers have been enforced with shatterproof glass. Some towns, using Newtown as an example, have prohibited campaigning near voting sites.
“I have thought about post election violence”, Newtown High School math teacher Kathleen Bremer, a registered voter for the 2024 election, said.
“Now if I don’t get elected, it’s gonna be a bloodbath for the country,” Trump said.
Trump has also had many other resurfacing threats about what will happenif he does not succeed at winning the election. Again, this has caused much speculation of encouraging violent actions.
“I am afraid some people may get angry with the election results, but I feel like we have learned from past mistakes.” Bremer said.
The divide between Democrats and Republicans has been growing, especially with the current election, which as well has raised worries concerning how these results will sit with both parties.
The January 6 event has been a controversial topic as well, some Republicans fear their party’s actions. Independent voters have also expressed their worries over the election results. Other independent voters put their focus on what policies are going to be put in place regardless of the winner.
“I’m not concerned about violence though I feel like there may be some isolated “revolts” but I feel like overall we will be in a good place.” Bremer said
Before the election occurred, there wasisolated violence. Elon Musk had encouraged many of Trump’s supporters to take to X and Facebook for the purpose of sharing opinions regarding both Harris and Trump.
“Now if I don’t get elected, it’s gonna be a bloodbath for the country,” Trump said.
Musk has recently put, “And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala” as a response to a question asking why former president Trump was a target of assassination. For that reason, there are assumptions social media will at the present time and in the future during the span of the 2024 election be surrounding politics and spreading opinions and propaganda.
As well, investors have had deeply rooted anxieties surrounding Election Day. Investors are worried about democracy itself, rather than just violence and riots. This is because although violence has been the topic of post-election, Investors have focused on the policies that the Democratic and Republican candidates have promised. Some Intelligence agencies have sent out warnings to be safe during voting and that voters should be on high alert.
