Throughout the past century the fashion trends of the time have changed drastically each decade. From funky patterns and leather boots in the 70s, flannels and denim overalls of the 90s, to skinny jeans and infinity scarves in the 2010s. Fashion is always changing and often repeating, so let's look at a few fall fashion trends that NHS students are loving this year.
“I love getting to wear boots and warm socks,” NHS senior Kaisi Paige’ Isidori said.
One of the biggest trends of this past year are Ugg boots. The most popular Ugg shoes this year are the classic ultra minis, the Tasman slippers and the platform Ugg minis.
“Uggs, they are easy to style, no matter what uggs are always going to be in, and they keep my feet warm on cold days,” NHS senior Alexa Manfredonia said.
Uggs were popular in the early 2010s, and since then there has been a love hate relationship between the media and Uggs. Multiple news organizations have published articles talking about the fact that people find them ugly and why they should not be a trend. The New York Times wrote an article headlined, “The Highly Unlikely Yet Totally Predictable Return of Uggs,” stating that once a ‘luxury’ shoe seen on celebrities in between takes while filming to a mass consumed and often called ‘ugly’ shoe. By the end of 2020 consumers were searching for comfort instead of style, as most people work from home and spend much more time inside.
“UGG have heavily influenced this lift as they have had an incredible season with us. This AW20 ‘inactive’ trend is super popular, as comfort and style are vital for our customers working from home and has definitely driven a massive uplift for brands like UGG, Birkenstock and slippers in general,” a buyer quoted in a report made by Lyst said.
Now, we’re seeing Uggs again from a different standpoint, as they’ve changed the vibe of the shoe from its past “cringy millennial aesthetic,” to more of a comfortable look with slippers such as the minis and Tasmans, which has shown to be more appealing to consumers.
“I honestly don’t think that they [Uggs] ever went out of style because I feel like they’re very timeless. I think that they’re [Ugg slippers] cute but I think that the trend will die down and we’ll all just revert back to the og’s,” NHS senior Julia Berry said.
Even as the UGG trend dominates this fall, there are other trends emerging in Newtown High School as well.
“Flannels or beanies and a basic hoodie,” NHS senior Stella Rankin said.
In recent years, 90s trends such as Mary Jane’s, flannel shirts, baggy jeans, and fashion sportswear have made their way back into style. A majority of the student body sport baggy or straight leg jeans, keeping the high rise and skinny jeans in the past for now. Denim has remained a clothing must have for decades, there are many different washes, styles, and rise types that they almost never go out of style. This fall season, jeans such as wide leg, flared and straight are popular, as well as denim maxi skirts coming back from their rise in the 70s. When thinking of fall fashion many students bring up dark wash denim, as the whole aesthetic of fall is darker more earth toned color pallets, and this fall is all about keeping it comfortable and simple.
“My absolute favorite fall trends have got to be mary janes and sheer black tights, maybe even leg warmers if you're feeling adventurous, but especially as a combo, I think they’re great,” Berry said.
Flannels are also a fall classic; they’re easy to wear, fit the fall vibe, and are perfect for the transition into the cold weather. Flannels have been a winter wardrobe classic since the 17th century, and since have provided people with comfort and style. Another timeless fall classic in most closets are sweaters.
“I like sweaters because they add a cozy aspect to fall,” NHS senior Sarah Gore said.
When it comes to fall fashion, sweaters are a must; they are easy to style, and can be dressed up or dressed down, chunky or thin, tight or loose, etc. On top of that, they are comfortable, cute and overall a trend that will never go out of style.
As with most fashion trends, everything is subjective. Everyone has a different style, which is what makes fashion so important as people often use fashion to express themselves and share their personal style with others.
