Newtown High School freshmen were welcomed to NHS this year by Flight Crew, a club where juniors and seniors support freshmen during their transition into high school. This club was formerly known as Link Crew, but changed slightly this year, and received a new title. Flight Crew will host several events throughout the beginning of the year, such as Freshman Orientation and an ice cream social.
“Freshmen were able to get acclimated to NHS by following their schedules and meeting teachers. It concluded with some games and activities at Blue and Gold Stadium. We are excited for other upcoming events including an ice cream social and football tailgate. These are great opportunities for our leaders and freshmen to reconnect and check in with one another about the first few weeks of school,” Flight Crew advisor Bobby Pattison said.
Orientation was held on August 28, where a mock schedule was run for the first time, giving people a chance to find the way to all of their classes and briefly meet their teachers before the year began. Orientation leaders were stationed all throughout the halls to help with locating rooms, and explaining more complicated parts of the schedule, such as lab periods or study halls.
“I think the mock schedule was really helpful for freshmen, and was overall really fun to get to know the new students as well,” Flight Crew member senior Kaliah Ames said.
These leaders could be identified by their pink Flight Crew shirt, while staff wore other colors of the same design. Similar to what Link Crew did in the past, these shirts were also worn for the first day of school.
“The shirts really are helpful, because even my freshman year I got lost and was able to find someone to help based on the shirt. So it is good for them to have someone they can definitely feel comfortable asking,” Flight Crew member Maddie Griffin said.
The goal of this, and the mock schedule is to ease anxieties of new students, and help them learn their way around the school efficiently. This should result in them getting to classes in time, and being able to be more focused during their class time.
“Orientation was really good because I got a chance to find all my classes, and also get a more detailed tour. The shirts were very helpful too, because it was nice to know that there were many people willing to help you find your classes, so that you didn't feel nervous just asking someone random in the hallway,” NHS freshman Libby Miller said.
Freshman classes first advisory was also led by their flight crew leaders on September 11th. The next event will be a tailgate before the first football game, held on September 20th.
“The Flight Crew has been busy this year, and we’re excited about everything we have planned. So far, we’ve run the freshman orientation and held an ice cream social to help our newest students feel welcomed. Coming up, we’re hosting a Freshman Tailgate at the first home football game and we’re planning a midterm prep session in January to support the freshmen as they tackle their first high school exams,” Flight Crew advisor Paige Hyman said.
