The holidays are approaching and people are preparing for the special days. Traditions are an important part of the holidays that bring the whole family together.
Some traditions include decorating the Christmas tree, lighting the Menorah for Hanukkah, or writing letters to Santa Claus. Every year, I go ice skating or roller skating with my family on Christmas Eve. It’s something I look forward to every year!
Many NHS students have varying ideas of traditions. They celebrate all kinds of holidays! NHS junior Faith Weir shared the fun times she has with her family.
“My favorite part of the holidays is probably seeing all of my family on Christmas Day even though we live really far apart. A special tradition I do for the holidays is that my family and I go to a pantomime in London,” NHS junior Faith Weir said.
Weir especially enjoys the food she shares with her family, and is something she looks forward to.
“Some special foods I have for the holidays are probably yorkshire puddings, my Nan’s mince loaf, boerewors (traditional south african sausage),” Weir shared.
NHS junior Olivia Bossio-Dotolo shares her tradition on Christmas Eve.
“My parents hide an ornament that’s a pickle in the Christmas tree and then on Christmas morning my sister and I have to race to find the pickle and whoever finds it first gets to open the first present,” Bossio-Dotolo said.
The pickle ornament is a tradition in which many families in America take part. Many believe it originated in Germany, but this tradition was actually created in America. Bossio-Dotolo also shared the joy she gets from the holidays.
“My favorite part of the holidays is the music and decorations and how everyone seems so happy and excited. There’s a special feeling around the holidays that I love. My family and I always make homemade raviolis around the holidays, she said.
Chemistry teacher Bridget Berechid said that she loves making food for Christmas Eve as well as cutting down a tree to decorate.
“I love cutting down our own Christmas tree. I have many memories through the years of my family trudging through the woods while searching for the "perfect tree". Our Christmas Eve traditional dinner always consists of roast beef, au gratin potatoes, and roasted brussel sprouts and carrots followed by apple pie and stilton cheese for dessert,” Berechid stated.
NHS senior Jason Voegeli also shared his favorite memories and traditions around Christmas.
“I would say my favorite part of the holidays is everything about Christmas and getting school off. Every New Year, my five cousins and two brothers and I have a tradition of putting together an informal, humorous skit about whatever, and I love doing that and performing it for my family,” Voegeli said. “On Christmas Eve, it's tradition for my family and our family friends to get Chinese food because I love Chinese food and it's amazing.”
There are so many traditions that make the time special for each family. The uniqueness and the bringing together of families is what makes the holidays so special and memorable. What are some of your favorite traditions?
