It is sleek, ergonomic, and brand-new. It is the culmination of 47 years of high-profile technological streamlining as well as a notable departure from what has worked for its parent company. The new iPhone 15 physically resembles some of its more distant predecessors, while simultaneously featuring unprecedented additions.
Apple launched the iPhone 15 on September 13th, in Cupertino, California. It was displayed as the centerpiece of Apple's yearly launch ceremony and will be available to the public on September 22nd. Needless to say, this was a major event in the tech world. The newest iPhone represents a notable departure from the last few models. It is designed to have a high upgrade value, as its curved edges are reminiscent of older models. Moreover, the iPhone's new camera layout caters to people who are sticking with older models, such as the 9 or the 10, with its symmetrical two-lens design.
Apple seems to be backtracking in some ways- reverting to what has worked for them previously. In other ways, they are switching to what has worked for other companies. Perhaps most notably, the newest iPhone features a USB-C port. This upgrade is intended to increase user convenience, and further enhance upgrade value. However, some analysts think that this decision will not make the splash that it was intended to.
“This is arguably the biggest disruption to iPhone design for several years, but in reality, it is hardly a dramatic move,” said Ben Wood, an analyst at CCS Insight.
This viewpoint is evidenced by the opinions of NHS students.
“I think it’s a downgrade. Just cause I’m used to this”. Howard Schuster of NHS said this, before gesturing towards the “lightning” charging port on his older iPhone model. The lightning charging port has been Apple's mainstay for years, with the switch to USB-C being their first-ever charging port switch-up.
In addition to the aesthetic and structural upgrades, which are always controversial, the new iPhone also features substantive technological upgrades. Most importantly, the iPhone’s camera includes a brand-new “3D sensor shift module”, and a new 48-pixel main sensor. These additions should drastically improve camera quality. The iPhone 15 also features the brand-new A16 processor, which will enable the new iPhone to run artificial intelligence applications more efficiently than its predecessors. Additionally, a new dynamic island, a new operating system, and an increased GB capacity solidify the iPhone 15 as a solid technological improvement, if nothing else. However, other NHS students are equally unenthusiastic about these improvements. “No”, said Daniel Leyva, when asked if the ability to efficiently run AI was something that mattered to him when selecting a new phone.
On paper, the new iPhone seems like the most substantive upgrade that Apple has released in years, and, according to Apple, customers seem to agree. Apple claims that their website was experiencing 20-minute time delays to facilitate the massive amount of iPhone 15 pre-orders that were taking place. But who are these people that are buying the new iPhone? Due to a general lack of dialogue and media coverage surrounding it, reporters believe that these people are not your average iPhone users. Instead, they must be tech fanatics.
That being said, the general populace seems to be more equivocal in regards to the new iPhone and its features.
“I think they’re useless. Just meant to get more money” NHS junior Caleigh Prieto said.
This is what she had to say when asked if she thought the new features were an upgrade. Others were completely unaware of the launch, including members of the NHS faculty.
“I would probably not upgrade to it”, NHS teacher Mrs. Kennedy said when asked if she would consider upgrading to the new iPhone, which she previously had not heard about.
Summarily, despite its innovative improvements in the areas of technology and marketability, the consensus seems to be indifferent.
