Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, created a show titled, With Love, Meghan found on Netflix. Sussex, who shared on the show and in interviews that she would like to be called Meghan Sussex, as she is married to Prince Harry and they are the Duchess and Duke of Sussex. (It’s common for royal family members to take the last name of the land they own. For example, York or Wales.)
Sussex’s show is a lifestyle show where she brings on friends or professional chefs and learns how to make practical and healthy treats. She makes a variety of goods, from bread and cake, to beeswax candles and dog treats. Sussex rented a house in LA to use as the set to keep her own house private.
The show is a window into the star’s life and how she likes to look for the joys in life rather than the imperfections. She shares personal stories of her life with friends like Mindy Kaling and her makeup artist when she was an actress, Daniel Martin.
An unnamed staff member on the show shared his experience working with Sussex and her show.
“She made sure everyone felt included, from Netflix executives to our director to every PA on set. No one was left out,” he told the outlet.“Most of the time, we’re expected to fade into the background, to be invisible. But in this show, we were part of it. We were included. It was a very unique and refreshing experience.”
The staffer also shared how she would make food and have the crew come to taste test what she had made. Sussex would often sit and talk to everyone, remembering random facts that people had shared about their lives.
Matiya Kouassi, a Newtown High School junior, shared what she loved about the show.
“The overall aesthetic. It’s clear that a lot of effort went into making everything look beautiful, and it’s fun to watch. Also, just seeing all of the guest stars and how they interact,” Kouassi stated.
“Maybe a few,” she said when asked if she would try any of the recipes. “But a lot of them seem more about presentation than practicality. Some look genuinely good and easy enough though, so maybe!”
However, the show received mixed reviews, many of them bad.
Chitra Ramaswamy of The Guardian wrote, in part, that the show has a "lack of humor, irony, self-awareness and apprehension of the reality of this deeply unequal and apocalyptic world that makes With Love, Meghan so unlovable in the end."
Noelle Meadows, an NHS senior, already didn’t like Meghan Sussex before the show.
“They’ve (Harry and Meghan, and the rest of the royal family) been fighting for years now. I think that maybe it stemmed from Meghan Markle. If you’re marrying the royal family, you know what you’re getting into. Harry just left his family. Packed up, moved to LA. Did some interviews about how terrible the royal family’s been to them. In my mind, family first before this random girl who came in and who was like, “You know what? I don’t like them because they don’t like me!” You’re marrying the royal family. They’re tradition. It is what it is.”
Although the show received mixed reviews, it has been renewed for a second season. But, there has been speculation as to whether Meghan and Harry’s contract has been renewed. Without the renewal, the second season may not be created. If produced, season two will be released sometime this fall.
