Midterm Elections

The 2026 midterm elections will take place on November 3, with voters across the country deciding who will represent them in Congress. The results will have an important impact on determining which party controls Congress and how the federal government operates during the next two years.

Midterm elections take place halfway through a president's 4 year term. During these elections, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and about one third of the seats in the Senate are up for election. Although voters will not be choosing a president, the results could affect the president’s ability to pass legislation and carry out his plans.

One of the main questions surrounding this year’s election is whether Republicans will maintain control of Congress. President Donald Trump and the Republican Party currently hold power in the federal government, but the midterms could cause a shift.

“We are a nation that seems to be on the verge of a civil war, red states versus blue states. Our government is supposed to be a government that has a balance of power and that there are checks and balances, it doesn’t seem to be that way anymore. It seems like the Republican congress is doing what the president wants them to do; whether you're republican or democrat, that's not a good thing. We have to challenge one another, there has to be some antagonism between those two branches of government… People are suffering economically, we are in a foreign war that a lot of people don’t support. There’s massive inflation and gas prices, the consumer confidence is at an all time low. There has to be a reckoning and that reckoning is going to be through the ballot box in November,” NHS social studies teacher Larry Saladin said.

Recent reports have highlighted concerns among Republican officials about the possibility of losing seats in Congress. If Republicans lose control of the House of Representatives or the Senate, it could become difficult for Trump to get legislation passed. However, the outcome will depend on how voters respond to the candidates and the issues being discussed throughout the campaigns.

“In the unlikely scenario where we lost the majority, I would expect my colleagues would ask me to continue leading this conference, even if we have divided government,” U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson said.

The economy is expected to be an important issue for voters, along with the cost of living, immigration and the Trump administration’s policies. These issues may influence how voters view the current administration and which candidates they choose to support. Candidates from both parties are addressing these concerns as they campaign for the upcoming election.

“Gas prices are up, grocery prices are up, interest rates are up, housing costs are up and health insurance premiums are up,” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said.

Democrats are hoping to gain seats and increase their influence in congress, while Republicans are working to maintain their majorities. Control of Congress affects which bills receive consideration, how federal spending is handled and how lawmakers manage the president's administration.

The midterm elections are important because the state elections can transfer power from one party to the other. They are important to make sure that the different parties get represented more equally across the country, and make sure there is not one party fully in charge. The results can change congress from being more republican to a more democratic one. The congress now is controlled by a republican congress, and it could become more democratic especially in the house of representatives,” NHS senior Brady Wennerholm said.

As the election gets closer, both parties face the challenge of gaining voter support in a closely watched political environment. The results of the midterm elections will determine the distribution of power in Congress and influence the direction of federal policy for the remainder of Trump’s term.
