A blockbuster trade happened in the NBA that no one ever thought would happen. A three team trade between the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, and the Utah Jazz happened on Saturday February 1st.
The Lakers received Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris from the Mavericks. The Mavericks received Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first round pick. The Jazz received Jalen Hood-Schifino, the Los Angeles Clippers second round pick in 2025, and the Mavericks 2025 second round pick. This news shocked all of the NBA as no one thought Luka Doncic would ever get traded from Dallas.
“I swear it was fake until I looked at the ESPN post. I would have never thought that Luka would ever get traded, I really don't see why the Mavericks would ever do that,” NHS junior Brayden Kozek said.
Doncic, only 25 years old, has all the accolades as being a superstar now and for years to come. Everyone in the NBA knows that Doncic is one of one. Doncic, a 5 time all-star and 5 time all NBA First team selection; also led the Mavericks to an NBA Finals last season. Not only that, he led the entire NBA in scoring during the regular season as well as topping all NBA players in points, assists, and rebounds during the entirety of the 2024 playoffs.
According to TheRinger.com, Luka Doncic is the fourth best player in the NBA based on its annual trade value ranking system.
“God-tier playmaker who sees the full cause-and-effect chain of every move he makes,” Editor of TheRinger.com Bill Simmons said.
Although Luka is a clear cut superstar, Anthony Davis is right up there with the best of the best. Davis is a 1 time NBA champion, 10 time all-star, 4 time all NBA first team, and 5 time all NBA defensive team. Davis was ranked as the ninth best player in the NBA According to TheRinger.com.
“A perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate who has embraced his identity by streamlining a once-limitless skill set,” Editor of TheRinger.com Bill Simmons said. Both players will bring excitement to their respective teams.
The Mavericks are looking at more of a “win now” situation because Davis is 31 years old, their point guard Kyrie Irving is 32, and shooting guard Klay Thompson is 34 years old. The Mavericks certainly have the pieces to make a run for a championship; the question remains whether they can do it without the help of Luka Doncic.
The Lakers on the other hand got their franchise guy; Doncic is positioned to help the Lakers for years to come because he is only 25 years of age. The Lakers won’t have Lebron James for much longer, so this trade seems to fill the massive hole that Lebron James will leave. There were many aspects of this trade, but to simplify it, Doncic to the Lakers and Davis to the Mavericks will change the league.
