Throughout the 2024-2025 season, Head Coach Chris Bray, followed by Assistant Coach Tom Maurath had quite the successful wrestling season.
The team won the South-West Conference Title, with 6 individual champions including freshman Ryder Symes, senior Shaun Daoust, sophomore Antonio Arguello, sophomore Jake Maddox, senior Marc Maurath, and senior Charles Dunn. Gioffre won Most Outstanding Wrestler, and Maurath won the SWC Career Award.
The team was a runner-up against Xavier in the Class L state Championships, with 6 wrestlers placing in the top 6, and the 2024 and 2025 Connecticut State Open Championship Runner-Up.
The team won their third consecutive New England Championship. Arguello, Gioffre, Maddox, and Maurath qualified for NHSCA Wrestling Nationals and went to Virginia Beach, Virginia to compete.
Maurath, Gioffre, and Arguello were honored at the All-State wrestling banquet for their achievements on the mat.
The team also has two wrestlers playing at the collegiate level in the future. Senior Captain Charles Dunn is committed to John Hopkins University and senior Captain Kenna Gioffre is committed to Roger Williams University to further extend their academic and athletic careers.
“To get to the level I am today I just kept working hard and pushing myself while also listening to people who gave me advice and motivated me, like my coaches, parents, and other family.” NHS sophomore Jake Maddox said.
Maddox was one of 6 individual champions at the SWC Championships, and was one of 4 wrestlers representing Newtown at the New England Championships and placed 6th overall in his weight class.
“Getting All-American, I would say my coaches and parents helped me by not making me feel like I’m pressured to win everything and giving me freedom.” NHS sophomore Antonio Arguello said.
Arguello had gotten his 100th varsity win during the New England Championship where he had placed second in his weight class. Arguello placed 5th at the 2025 NHSCA High School Wrestling Nationals and was awarded the Sophomore All-American Award.
“The youth program and high school teams have worked together for more than 15 years to help our elementary and middle school wrestlers prepare for high school level competition,” said Tom Maurath to the Newtown Bee.
The Newtown Youth Wrestling Association Has been coaching kids since 1971, and this program has been known for preparing kids for high school, and then in the future at the collegiate level. Generally, Newtown is known for being one of the most competitive and strongest teams in the South-West Conference and it is for this reason.
“We had a very successful wrestling season, we won the SWC Championships, but I think it was out of 12 teams. We had six individual champions. Myself, I won SWC’s and I won Most-Outstanding Wrestler. Then we went to the Class L Championships, where we got second place, losing to Xavier, but it was very close. We had three individual champions, and we sent three wrestlers to the State Open Championships, and took second at State Opens. We had one individual champion which was myself. Mark Maurath and Antonio Arguello got second place and Jake got third place. Then we sent four wrestlers to the New England Championships and all four of us qualified. Mark and Antonio got second place, I got fourth, Jake got sixth place, and we placed fourth as a team at New England’s.” NHS senior Kenna Gioffre said.
The wrestling team had a very successful year and according to captain Kenna Gioffre it was “one of the best seasons we've ever known.”
