Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce announced their engagement via Instagram on August 26. The post, captioned "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” included Swift’s song “So High School,” which is rumored to be written about Kelce. The announcement has accumulated over 36 million likes, becoming the 9th most liked post on Instagram.

Kelce’s father, Ed, later revealed that the proposal had actually taken place about two weeks before the public announcement. He said his son led Swift into the garden before dinner, where he surprised her with the ring. The eight-carat old-mine brilliant cut diamond was designed in collaboration with jeweler Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry.

“I think they are an adorable couple, and look very happy, and that’s all that matters. A lot of people who dislike Taylor Swift are so overly concerned with hating on their relationship, but what they don’t realize is that their opinion doesn’t change the fact that Taylor Swift is a very successful woman and kind person, and that Taylor and Travis are in a healthy, loving relationship,” NHS senior Gabby DeNicola said.

Kelce talked about the engagement for the first time on his podcast, New Heights, which he co-hosts with his brother and retired NFL player Jason.

“It’s been really fun telling everybody who I’m going to be spending the rest of my life with,” Kelce said. “I still get giddy… It’s exciting times.”

Kelce also said that calling Swift his fiancée feels “different” and more official. He explained that he first introduced her as his fiancée at a Cincinnati Bearcats game, just days after they went public with the news.

The engagement comes after a highly publicized relationship that began in 2023. Swift first appeared at a Chiefs game in September of that year, sitting with Kelce’s mother. Their relationship became more public over the following months, with Swift bringing friends like Blake Lively and Sophie Turner to games and Kelce attending Swift’s Eras Tour. He later made a cameo on stage in London during her 2024 shows.

In December 2024, Swift spoke openly about their relationship in her Time Person of the Year interview, explaining that it began privately before she ever attended a Chiefs game.

“We actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I’m grateful for, because we got to get to know each other,” Swift said.

By June 2024, Swift had posted her first Instagram photo with Kelce, further confirming their status as a couple.

Despite positive media attention, many people have professed their distaste for how much press the couple has been getting.

“I am not a huge fan of the Swift-Kelce relationship media storm. I am happy for them for finding love, but I do not care to see or hear about it everywhere. The media has put it front and center and in your face ad nauseam. So much focus and attention is put on what they are wearing and who they are hanging out with in the luxury suites. How many times will she be shown on television during the first Chiefs game? They are extremely talented and gifted performers. I do not want to watch a tabloid, though,” NHS Social Studies teacher Robert Pattison said.

The engagement announcement came just weeks after Swift appeared as a guest on New Heights to discuss both her relationship and her upcoming 12th album, The Life of a Showgirl, which will be released on October 3. Swift’s appearance marked the first time the couple publicly spoke together about their relationship.
