Ukrainian Bombing

Russian Forces bombed the Ukrainian Derzhprom building last monday. The building was seen as a memorial to The Soviet Union’s architectural prowess, and was recently being used as a government building. The Derzhprom building lies in the city of Kharkiv, which is constantly under raid due to the fact that it’s located only eighteen miles from the Russian border. The Derzhprom building was listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites as “Tentative.” This guided bomb strike also hit a medical center, an apartment building, and a storage facility in Kharkiv.

“It is truly horrifying to see, if we look back at world war two, even Hitler couldn’t do what the Russians have done,” Mayor Ihor Terekhov said.

Terekov also called the building an architectural treasure for all of Ukraine. The guided bomb strikes killed four people and injured at least six. Terekov said in a public statement that,

“If we look back at World War II, even Hitler couldn’t do what the Russians have done,” President Zelensky said.

“I think that it’s very bad that they aren’t even sparing their own historic landmarks.”

NHS Sophomore Rusa Ellul said.

Zelensky stated to be horrified and saddened by the destruction of Derzhprom. Zelensky also criticized UN Chief António Guterres for meeting with President Putin at the Brics Summit last week.

“Every handshake with war criminal Putin boosts his confidence. Every pleasant smile convinces him that he can get away with his crimes. Instead of cozying up to him, we must force him into peace through our collective decisiveness,” Zelensky said.

Security expert Maria Alveeda was saddened by the destruction of Derzhprom’s destruction, sharing how it was the largest surviving constructivist monument in the world. She followed this up by sharing what she believes Russia's plan has been.

“This is Russia strategy of terror and intimidation in action,” Alveeda said.

This air raid not only destroyed an important symbol of the Soviet Union, but they also destroyed The Assumption Cathedral, which was commemorating Czar Alexander I’s victory over Napoleon.

“Putin’s attacks undermine his ideology that Russians and Ukrainians are “one people,’” Ronald G. Suny, professor of History from Michigan University said.

It has devastated the Ukrainian people that such a great Ukrainian landmark has been destroyed.
