The upcoming Presidential Election in November has already broken voting records. Voting registration numbers hit an all time high mainly among young people, and first time voters.
“As American citizens who were born or came into the country where it is our right to vote, it is important to use the ability,” Maria Souza, the Youth Secretariat in Newtown High Schools Model United Nations Cub said.
National Voters Registration Day hit a record of 150,000 people registering to vote in one day, the most Vote.org has ever seen on that day. Roughly, about 80% of those registered turn up to vote come election day. Early voting will start October 21st, while the official election day is Tuesday, November 5, 2024 this year.
Pop culture star, Taylor swift, had a link posted on the social media platform, Instagram, which led 337, 826 people directly to websites to register to vote. Swift has directly came out and said on multiple platforms, that she supports Harris and will be voting for her in this upcoming election.
In July, Democratic president Joe Biden withdrew his candidacy in the best interest of the party and country. Although, Biden remains in office, still serving as president until the end of his term.
In his candidacy vacancy, current Vice President Kamala Harris was nominated and secured to fill the spot by having the reinforcement and support of 2,350 delegates. Her upcoming potential presidential term would break records, having her as the first Black, Asian woman running for president.
Leaving an empty opening next to her in the vice president seat, Harris is placed with a few options such as Josh Shapiro, Tim Walz, and Mark Kelly. Harris ended up choosing the 69 year old Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota.
Kamala respected his governing record, personality, his biography, and his tendency to win vigorous races. “Tim Walz is a great representative of Kamala as well as the average American citizen,” Souza said. “He was a football coach, he was a teacher, and he was even a veteran”
Democrats say that 99% of them involved plan to vote for Harris, or 3,923 delegates.
“I think that America is divided, this decision believes to have people split between a rock and a hard place,” Souza continued.
Harris has been currently leading the polls but by a small margin.
“The 2024 election is one of the first elections that we as a generation can understand and honestly really care about. It’s the first of the elections where we understand the policies and it will make an extreme change in our future” NHS sophomore Marcela Corral said.
Donald Trump has officially run for president 4 times, including this upcoming election. Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, is a first-time senator from Ohio, and potentially a republican candidate in 2028. Although, Trump has stated that if he loses this election, he will not be running again in the future elections.
The first presidential debate including these two candidates was held on September 10. 2024. It starts off with Kamala walking to Trump's podium which was perceived as a ‘power move’ by many social media sources. Taking several turns, this debate brushes on topics from immigration, abortion, taxes, economical issues, and foreign policies. This will be the first and only debate between the two, since Harris requested another but was quickly dismissed since “It’s too late, early voting will already be beginning,” Trump said.
