The Newtown High School Winterguard placed fourth in the Musical Arts Conference Championships on Friday April 6. The team, placing with a score of 83.280, performed a program titled “Giddy Up” which included a mashup of Shania Twain songs. This program also led them to win the Southwest Conference championship in the Scholastic A category.
Throughout the season, the winterguard, consisting of 14 members, went to a total of eight competitions over the course of their four month season. This season their program was a tribute to Shania Twain, with the music featuring the songs “Man, I Feel Like a Woman” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much.”
The season began in December with consistent practices on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. The first competition took place on February 2nd at Masuk High School where the team scored a 63.630 and placed third. Behind them was the Norwalk High School Winterguard, and in front, Naugatuck High School Winterguard and Southington High School Winterguard.
The following competition took place at East Haven High School on February 17th, where the team placed second, with a score of 63.910. On February 24th, Newtown competed at Naugatuck High School, once again placing fourth with a score of 73.790, only 1.4 points behind third place.
The Newtown Winterguard’s home show was the next competition,, which was held on March 2nd. During the home show, the team did not compete, although they did an exhibition by performing their show for the audience without receiving a score.
“This season of winterguard went really well. We all put in lots of hard work and energy into making this the best show possible,” Newtown High School senior and varsity winterguard team member Chelsea Caulderbank said.
Newtown got a score of 73.190, putting them in second place at the New Milford High School competition on March 9. Newtown then went on to score a 80.110 at Bunnell High School on March 16th, placing them in third, and ultimately making them the SWCchampions.
On March 23rd, the Winterguard attended a competition at Norwalk High School, where they dropped down to fifth place with a score of 77.760. However, the team made their way back up for a score of 83.280 on April 6th to place fourth in the Championship in the Scholastic A category.
The Newtown High School Junior Varsity team finished in second in the Championship in the Scholastic AAA category, with their program “Channel 12 News: Special Weather Report”. The weather-themed show scored 81.640 points during their Championship performance, and won Southwest Conference Championship in the Scholastic AAA category as well.
“Every season has its highs and lows, but this season brought me so much joy. The performers on the varsity team brought this sassy character to life and made creating this show so exciting,” Varsity coach, Becca Tobin said.
