President Donald Trump has made over 75 executive actions in the first 100 days in office, which is the most of any president in the past 40 years. Over 35 of these actions address the Federal government, especially the Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI).
Some notable titles include, “Commencing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy,” “Eliminating the Federal Executive Institute”, “Protecting Second Amendment Rights”, “Eradicating Anti-Christian Bias”, “Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling”, “The Iron Dome for America,” and “Withdrawing The United States From The World Health Organization.” Many actions resulted in defunding certain government offices, one office Trump aims to defund the Department of Education, as well as the CDC.
“He’s trying to legislate through executive orders. He’s not the first president to try to do this but that doesn’t make it right,” NHS history teacher Larry Saladin said.
Some of these orders have resulted in mass layoffs in the government, and the halting of hiring new government officials as well. A big example is recently when many CDC employees working in a division which targeted diseases, were fired en masse. Another federal change is the revoking of all clearance and government contracts with Covington and Burling LLP, which aided special counsel Jack Smit and the “permanent, investigative, and prosecutorial agency.”
“When the executive branch wields its power to single out a specific law firm and its attorneys for their past or present representation, it strikes at the heart of an impartial and independent justice system,” the Boston Bar Association said.
Some people feel as if these orders are for president Trump’s benefit partly due to this order. Covington and Burling were active and were involved in president Trump’s trial, providing pro bono legal services to special counsel Jack Smith during the case. Some people still feel that the country should not be led by a felon, and this has caused even more of a stir. On the other hand some people feel that Trump is still very qualified to lead our country, due to his prior experiences with the law.
“Trump is a horrible representative of our country and has no seriousness,”
NHS sophomore Rusa Ellul said.
An order titled “America first trade agreement” states that tariffs will be added to foreign goods as well as the government will review what countries they will pursue trade with.
“The memorandum calls for a review of whether China is “acting in accordance” with the trade deal reached during the first Trump administration as well as the effect of current tariffs and “other acts, policies, and practices by the PRC that may be unreasonable or discriminatory,”” Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, LLP representatives said.
“Shall assess the loss of tariff revenues and the risks from importing counterfeit products and contraband drugs, e.g., fentanyl, that each result from the current implementation … shall recommend modifications as warranted to protect both the revenue of the United States and the public health by preventing unlawful importations,” Section 1:i of the order states.
Some Americans feel like this executive order does benefit the American people. “President Trump’s executive orders prioritize America’s security, economy, and wellbeing, ensuring that our government works for the people, not against them,” NHS sophomore Reid Geissler said.
There are many orders that deal with religion, and specifically religious persecution. Specifically this order applies to Christians and Muslims. Trump assembles a task force in the department of justice to eradicate anti-Christian bias, appointing the attorney general as the chair of this task force.
“The Biden Department of Justice ignored hundreds of attacks on Catholic churches, charities, and pro-life centers.” The executive order said.
The order explains how freedom of religion is part of the first amendment and those who try to threaten a religious group should be brought to justice. “Yet the previous Administration engaged in an egregious pattern of targeting peaceful Christians, while ignoring violent, anti-Christian offenses.
The Biden Department of Justice sought to squelch faith in the public square by bringing Federal criminal charges and obtaining in numerous cases multi-year prison sentences against nearly two dozen peaceful pro-life Christians for praying and demonstrating outside abortion facilities.” Trump states in section one of the order.
Trump makes many claims that the Biden administration was responsible for religious persecution and that the administration was not protecting the first amendment. Some Americans find the amount of orders released unconstitutional, but others feel like they are attempts at fixing certain economic and cultural issues within the US. There are arguments for both sides and it will become evident what the motives are when the orders come to fruition.
