Ukraine War Update

The war in Ukraine continues on as allies on both sides come to their aids. North Korea came to Russia’s aid back in November, deploying 12,000 troops.

These North Korean soldiers have been known to be brutal and to utilize near-suicide tactics. North Korean soldiers are highly trained, and have been reported to be sharpshooters. Ukrainian forces have reported Korean soldiers shooting down drones from over 100 meters away. These soldiers have helped Russian forces recover about 250 miles of territory occupied by Ukraine in the Kursk region. North Korean soldiers have not been spotted on frontlines for over three weeks. It is suspected that the soldiers have fallen back.

“The presence of DPRK troops has not been observed for about three weeks, and they were probably forced to withdraw after suffering heavy losses,” Colonel Oleksandr Kindratenko stated in an interview with CNN.

Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky has reported that Ukraine has only received about 76 billion dollars for the war effort, out of the 175 billion USD pledged by the Biden administration.

“But when it’s said that Ukraine received $200 billion to support the army during the war – that’s not true. I don’t know where all that money went, Perhaps it’s true on paper with hundreds of different programmes – I won’t argue, and we’re immensely grateful for everything. But in reality, we received about $76 billion. It’s significant aid, but it’s not $200 billion,” Zelensky said in a public statement.

After this statement a statistic from the American Enterprise Institute surfaced showing that around 70% of the Ukraine-aid has been spent domestically in the U.S. President Trump has agreed to continue to aid Ukraine,in return for Ukraine's natural resources.

“We’re looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they’re going to secure what we’re giving them with their rare earth and other things,” President Trump stated in an interview from the Oval Office on February 3rd.

For over a year there have been attempts to arrange a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. Now that there is a possibility of a ceasefire, many question whether a ceasefire would be effective, or if Russia would agree to it. Russia is gaining ground in Ukrainian territory, and taking back Russian land occupied by Ukraine.

“Ukraine will only agree to the ceasefire if it comes with security, like NATO membership or European peacekeeping forces. They want this because there’s always the chance Russia will invade again,” NHS sophomore Rusa Ellul said.

Ukraine’s government and citizens fear another Russian invasion even if there is a ceasefire. The nation is still calling for NATO support, and resources from allies, in hope that they will have protection in case another invasion occurs.
