NHS Teacher on Mission Trip
An NHS teacher went on a mission trip to educate teachers and students about different learning tools over spring break. NHS Computer Science teacher Kristen Violette went on her second mission trip with her church to Constanza, Dominican Republic. Violette had previously gone last August. Though other members devoted their time to more faith-based works, Violette took this opportunity to strengthen the local education in any way she could. In the Dominican Republic, only a

A Learning Approach
As a junior at Newtown High School, myself and other students have noticed the approach to learning has changed. We believe that school today is more about passing your classes, finishing your assignments on time, rather than learning from the content. There are always going to be kids who are considered ‘lazy’, and could never care less about their grades. But overall, most kids want to do well in school and are willing to do whatever it takes to get there. “For junior

In the Connecticut State House, the state representative's job is to draft and vote on legislation and represent Newtown in the legislature up in Hartford. “I was born and raised in Connecticut, my parents were also born and raised in Connecticut. I have deep family roots here at home in Connecticut,” Moore said. “I was

Flight Attendant Injured
Veteran flight attendant Solange Tremblay was seriously injured after being ejected from a plane during a crash at LaGuardia Airport in New York on March 22, when the plan collided with a firetruck. Despite being thrown hundreds of feet while still strapped into her seat, she survived the impact. Tremblay, who has more than two decades of experience as a flight attendant, was seated in a reinforced crew jump seat near the front of the aircraft at the time of the crash. During

Microplastics
For the past year, scientists have been finding microplastics inside different organs of the human body, and they are causing many dangerous health issues. Many are aware that plastic has been negatively affecting the environment by polluting oceans and ecosystems. But what people may not realize is that plastic has also begun to pollute people’s bodies. Plastics are found nearly everywhere nowadays. In fact, most products in the world contain plastic. This is because it is a

Spring Music 2026
Music for Spring 2026 - and beyond - has been good to us. April 24th brought us Noah Kahan’s new album The Great Divide and Conan Gray’s Wishbone Deluxe. In addition, April 17th gave us Olivia Rodrigo’s single Drop Dead. (My personal favorite of this bunch.) Rodrigo’s album is set to release June 12th. A lesser known artist who is on the rise, Malcolm Todd, has also released two songs this spring with Breathe on March 13th, and I Saw Your Face on April 23rd. There are rumors

Sisters Leaving For College
As the second semester begins seniors are making decisions about college, which turns many siblings into only children at home starting next fall. Soon spring events like prom, April break, even the last day of school will be coming quickly. This seems exciting, but it means that soon most seniors will be going away, leaving their siblings at home. This is true for NHS sophomores Amelia Bossio-Dotolo and Amelia Schmidt as their older sisters, Olivia and Aquinnah respectively,

Mason Miller has had a historically dominant stretch to the 2026 MLB season. The San Diego Padres closing pitcher’s scoreless innings streak reached up to 34 ⅔ innings, the longest streak in team history before being broken on April 27th. This is the highest by a pitcher in his first eight appearances of a season since at least 1900. He
Yale Athletics Scrutiny
Yale University is facing scrutiny as a growing group of former coaches and student-athletes allege a "toxic culture" and a "culture of fear" within the athletic department under the leadership of Athletic Director Victoria Chun. The controversy, which comes as the university administration evaluates Chun’s contract renewal, was catalyzed by a letter from retired Yale men’s hockey coach Keith Allain. In a letter obtained by the New York Post, "She is the absolute worst leade

2026 NFL Draft
The 2026 NFL Draft has concluded with multiple shocks, stories, and high expectations. Fernado Mendoza, the Heisman winning quarterback from Indiana, was the first overall pick of the draft going to the Las Vegas Raiders. Everyone expected Mendoza to go 1 so that was not a shock to anyone. Mendoza stayed home with his family and watched the draft in his home. Mendoza also won the National Championship with Indiana last season and the Raiders hope that will result in a Super B

Seasonal Allergies
As spring approaches full bloom, seasonal allergies spike as more and more people are affected by pollen outbreaks. Allergies typically last from mid February to early in the summer then from late August to early October. However, mid winter temperatures and a rainy spring can cause plants to pollinate faster which can cause symptoms to last longer. This surge in allergy symptoms are due to the types of weather that occur in each season. The pollen gets washed away by the rai

Other Than the Phone
Electronics have taken over our freetime, the average person spends between four and five hours on their phone per day. When people find free hours with nothing to fill them, they tend to default back to scrolling on a phone or putting on a show. These activities have negative effects on your brain such as reduced creativity. Endlessly scrolling on your phone may seem harmless when in reality it is cause for depression, anxiety and can be addictive. This is because of dopami

Blue Light Poisoning
With the increased reliance on digital technology, people have found themselves on their devices much more. This constant exposure to blue light, especially at night, can have a multitude of negative effects on the body, often resulting in eye damage and sleep deprivation. Natural blue light is found in the sun, though it gives off this light in much shorter wavelengths than digital devices. There is also artificial blue light, which is given off by LED and fluorescent lights
